Neighborhood History

Japantown — known in Japanese as Nihonmachi, or 'Japanese people's town' — is one of the largest and oldest ethnic Japanese enclaves in the United States. Japanese immigrants first arrived in San Francisco in significant numbers in the 1860s and settled near Chinatown and south of Market Street. After the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed those early communities, Japanese families relocated to the Western Addition, an area untouched by the fires, and established businesses, temples, and residences that by 1940 had grown into a district of more than 5,000 residents and 200 Japanese-owned businesses — Nihonjin-machi was then one of the largest Japanese communities outside Japan. In February 1942, Executive Order 9066 forced the entire Japanese community of San Francisco into incarceration camps, leaving Japantown vacant for the duration of the war. The community slowly rebuilt after 1945, though 1960s urban renewal claimed much of the original Victorian fabric.

The Japan Center, opened in 1968, anchors Japantown today with three indoor shopping malls on Post Street. At its heart stands the San Francisco Peace Pagoda, a five-tiered concrete stupa designed by Japanese architect Yoshiro Taniguchi and donated to San Francisco by the people of Osaka in 1968, designated a San Francisco Landmark. The Bush Street–Cottage Row Historic District preserves twenty Victorian residences and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Japantown's story of community formation, forced removal, and cultural endurance is one of San Francisco's most important — and MY-NHD apparel carries it with full recognition of what that history means.
