Jefferson Park takes its name from President Thomas Jefferson, chosen when the township organized in 1850, after residents learned a nearby town had already claimed "Monroe" for President Monroe. Elijah Wentworth built the area's first tavern in the 1830s at Sand Ridge, near the junction of three Native American trails that would later become Milwaukee, Higgins, and Northwest Highway, and the settlement joined Chicago in 1889.

Its position at that trail junction made Jefferson Park a transportation hub from the start, a role that only grew as railroads, streetcars, and eventually the Kennedy Expressway and Blue Line converged here, earning the neighborhood its nickname, the Gateway to Chicago. Polish immigrants arriving through the early 20th century built St. Constance Church in 1916, and in 1979 the Copernicus Foundation purchased the old 1930 Gateway Theatre, transforming the Rapp and Rapp-designed movie palace into the Copernicus Center, Chicago's Polish cultural hub.
