Neighborhood History

Jeffery Manor takes its name from nearby Jeffery Boulevard and Merrionette Manor, the adjoining loop-streeted subdivision developer Robert Merrion built to meet the post-World War II housing boom. Construction on Jeffery Manor itself began in 1947, when Swift Properties built duplexes and bungalows for returning veterans buying their first homes on the GI Bill, drawn by jobs at the nearby steel mills.

The neighborhood broke from Chicago's traditional street grid entirely, laying out curving drives and complete loops that gave the area its lasting suburban feel, still visible in the section locals call "Vet's Park." The Jeffery Manor branch of the Chicago Public Library, which opened in 1999, still serves the community with local art installations, and Merrionette Manor's distinctive winding streets remain one of the only breaks from the grid anywhere on the South Side.

MY-NHD's Jeffery Manor collection is built for a neighborhood that broke the mold, literally, laying its streets in loops instead of lines to build a suburb inside the city.
