The Joaquin Miller Park neighborhood takes its name from the park that forms its heart — Oakland's largest municipal park, named for Cincinnatus Hiner Miller, the 19th-century California poet known as the Poet of the Sierras, who donated a portion of his hillside estate to the City of Oakland in 1919. Miller lived on the adjacent property he called The Hights, where his preserved cabin, funeral pyre, and Abbey are maintained as historic structures within the park by the City of Oakland. The Woodminster Amphitheater — an outdoor theatre built within the park in 1938 by the Works Progress Administration and operated by the City of Oakland — has hosted summer theatrical productions in the Oakland hills for more than eight decades, making it one of the Bay Area's most enduring community performance venues. The residential neighborhood surrounding the park developed through the early and mid-20th century as Oakland's hillside expansion brought families to the oak-studded slopes above the Dimond and Laurel districts. Skyline Boulevard and Joaquin Miller Road form the primary corridors connecting the neighborhood to the broader Oakland hills network.
