Neighborhood History

Jordan Park is a small residential neighborhood in the northern part of San Francisco's Western Addition, bordered by Arguello Boulevard, California Street, Geary Boulevard, and Parker Avenue. The blocks that now make up Jordan Park were purchased by James Clark Jordan in 1891. Jordan's land was used by the military during the Spanish-American War of 1898, and beginning around 1900 he developed the property into a neighborhood of wide streets with large homes set on spacious lots with lawns and gardens — a development that continued through approximately 1920. Jordan Park is recognized as one of San Francisco's master-planned residence parks, a group of exclusive planned communities in the city's western neighborhoods that emphasized landscaping, curvilinear design, and residential quality, alongside explicit deed restrictions that initially prohibited commercial activity and, in common with other residence parks of the era, included racial covenants later invalidated by the Supreme Court.

The neighborhood is often confused with adjacent Laurel Heights, which developed on the former Laurel Hill Cemetery land to its east. Jordan Park's character is defined by its large Edwardian and craftsman homes, tree-lined streets, and proximity to the California Street corridor with its shops and cable car line. St. John's Presbyterian Church at Lake and Arguello anchors the neighborhood's civic life.

Jordan Park's quiet residential identity — shaped by one man's deliberate vision and a century of community stewardship — is the story MY-NHD apparel wears for this San Francisco neighborhood.
