Neighborhood History

K-Town takes its name from a 1913 Chicago street-naming plan devised by John D. Riley, superintendent of the city's Bureau of Maps, meant to untangle the mismatched street names left behind by Chicago's 1889 annexations. Riley's system assigned each mile west of the Indiana state line its own letter, and K, the eleventh letter, landed on the streets eleven miles out, running through North Lawndale and West Garfield Park: Karlov, Keeler, Kedvale, Kostner, and more.

The greystones and brick two-flats that line those K-named streets went up in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, first housing Czech immigrant families and later one of Chicago's largest Jewish communities before the neighborhood's Great Migration-era transformation. The K-Town Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010, and the CTA Pink Line's Pulaski and Kostner stations still carry residents through the same streets Riley's alphabet plan named more than a century ago.

MY-NHD's K-Town collection is built for a neighborhood whose name is, quite literally, a map: an entire alphabet system reduced to a single letter, and a community built along it.
