Neighborhood History

Kelvyn Park takes its name from Kelvyn Grove, the settlement Scottish immigrants built in the 1880s at the narrow north end of Hermosa, honoring physicist William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, the man behind the Kelvin temperature scale and the concept of absolute zero. The land stayed largely undeveloped until the 1920s, when Chicago's bungalow boom filled the neighborhood with brick bungalows and two-flats for the city's growing middle class.

The neighborhood's namesake park came together the same way: the Northwest Park District began acquiring land for it in 1914, and a two-story brick fieldhouse, designed by architect Walter W. Ahlschlager, opened in 1928. The park joined the Chicago Park District's citywide system in 1934, and Kelvyn Park High School, built alongside it, still anchors the neighborhood's civic life today.

MY-NHD's Kelvyn Park collection is built for a neighborhood named for a Scottish scientist by the Scottish immigrants who first settled its ground.
