Kosciuszko Park takes its name from Tadeusz Kościuszko, the Polish-born military engineer who fought in the American Revolution and later led an uprising against Russian and Prussian rule in his homeland. The Northwest Park District began acquiring land for the park in 1914 and dedicated it in 1916, part of a Progressive-era push to place a neighborhood park in every ten square miles of its jurisdiction.

Architect Albert A. Schwartz, later joined by Frederick William Bowes, designed the park's Tudor Revival fieldhouse, expanded in 1936 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. The site once housed one of the Chicago Public Library's busiest branches, closed in the 1950s, and one of the city's first Polish-language Saturday schools, a tradition the nearby Tadeusz Kościuszko School of Polish Language still carries on. St. Hyacinth Basilica anchors the neighborhood's western edge, and a 1980s natatorium rounds out the park's recreational offerings.
