Lake Street is an affluent residential neighborhood in the northern portion of San Francisco's Richmond District, bordered by the Presidio to the north and named for its proximity to Mountain Lake — one of the few remaining natural lakes in San Francisco and the only natural lake within the 80,000-acre Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The street and neighborhood take their name from this small but historically significant water body, which served as an early water source for the Presidio and the emerging city. Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza ended his second northward expedition at Mountain Lake on March 27, 1776, stopping for two days before continuing to locate the site for the future Presidio of San Francisco; a plaque placed in September 1957 commemorates this event near the lake's eastern shore.

Lake Street developed as a residential enclave of Victorian and Edwardian homes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, taking on the character of a garden suburb adjacent to the military reservation. The lots between Lake Street and the Presidio boundary followed a semi-planned development pattern similar to Sea Cliff and other Outer Richmond enclaves, with large homes oriented toward Pacific Ocean and Presidio views. Mountain Lake Park, managed as part of the Presidio, provides the neighborhood's primary open green space with dog runs, tennis courts, and trail connections into the Presidio's broader network.
