Lake Temescal takes its name from the Ohlone word temescal — a sweat lodge used in ceremonial and medicinal practice — reflecting the Indigenous presence in the Oakland hills long before European settlement. The lake itself was dammed in 1868 by the Contra Costa Water Company to serve as the East Bay's first municipal reservoir, supplying fresh water to Oakland and the surrounding communities before the development of the EBMUD system. Lake Temescal Regional Recreation Area — managed by the East Bay Regional Parks District and opened to the public in 1936 — is the neighborhood's defining landmark, offering swimming, fishing, and trail access within walking distance of the surrounding residential streets. Temescal Creek, the natural waterway that feeds the lake, runs south through the Temescal neighborhood and has been the subject of ongoing urban creek restoration managed by Friends of Temescal Creek in partnership with the City of Oakland. The intersection of Telegraph Avenue and 51st Street — the heart of the Temescal commercial district — lies immediately south, connecting Lake Temescal residents to one of Oakland's most active independent retail and dining corridors. That combination of Indigenous heritage, water infrastructure history, and natural recreation is the foundation of the MY-NHD Lake Temescal collection.
