Neighborhood History
Lakeshore, also known as Lakeshore Park, is a residential neighborhood on the north shore of Lake Merced in southwestern San Francisco, developed between the early 1940s and mid-1950s by the Standard Building Company under brothers Carl and Fred Gellert. The Gellerts, who had established the Standard Building Company in 1922 and built thousands of homes across the Bay Area, developed Lakeshore as a deliberately upscale residential tract — their marketing described it as a 'de luxe subdivision' and the development carried restrictive covenants common to postwar tracts of its type. The Gellert brothers constructed their 'Sunstream' prefabricated homes throughout the neighborhood, with the tract bounded roughly by Sloat Boulevard, Lake Merced Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard, and the former Fleishhacker Pool site. The area occupies land that had been watershed property of the Spring Valley Water Company before San Francisco created its municipal water system and sold the surrounding land for residential development in the 1930s.
Lake Merced itself, the largest body of fresh water in San Francisco, borders the neighborhood to the south and east and has been used for recreation — including rowing, fishing, and golf — since the 1870s. The San Francisco Zoo, established on the former Fleishhacker Pool grounds adjacent to Lakeshore, anchors the neighborhood's western edge on Sloat Boulevard.
Lakeshore's postwar residential character — shaped by the Gellerts' vision of lakeside suburban living within city limits — gives MY-NHD apparel for this neighborhood a distinctly mid-century San Francisco identity.
