Neighborhood History

Lakeside is a North Oakland neighborhood developed circa 1894 along the northern shore of Lake Merritt, its early 20th-century apartment buildings and historic homes reflecting its long status as one of Oakland's most sought-after residential addresses. The Camron-Stanford House on Lakeside Drive — built in 1876 and the sole surviving example of the grand Victorian residences that once lined the lakefront — is Oakland's oldest intact house open to the public and a California Registered Historical Landmark. The Lakeside Park Garden Center on Bellevue Avenue, operated by the City of Oakland, encompasses the historic dahlia garden, Japanese garden, and bonsai garden on the lake's northern shore — one of the most visited public horticultural spaces in the East Bay. The Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center — the former civic auditorium on 10th Street, a 1914 Beaux-Arts building currently undergoing adaptive reuse — anchors the neighborhood's southern edge as a landmark of Oakland's civic architectural heritage. The Lake Merritt BART station provides the district's regional transit connection. That combination of Victorian history, civic green space, and lakeside urban character is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Lakeside collection.
