Neighborhood History
Lakeside is a compact residential neighborhood in southwestern San Francisco, developed between 1936 and 1950 by the Stoneson Development Corporation under brothers Ellis and Henry Stoneson — Canadian-born sons of Icelandic immigrants who had arrived in San Francisco in 1920 and built the Standard Building Company into one of the nation's largest home-building firms. The Stonesons conceived Lakeside as an 'aristocrat of home developments,' marketing it to professional and executive buyers with homes priced between $9,000 and $15,000 — steep figures for a country still emerging from the Depression. The neighborhood is bounded by Sloat Boulevard to the north, Junipero Serra Boulevard and 19th Avenue to the east and west, and stretches south toward the San Francisco-Daly City county line. Architect Harold G. Stoner designed many of the early Lakeside homes, and the brothers built their own mansions on Stonecrest Drive overlooking Lake Merced. A Mayan-temple-meets-lighthouse sales office at 1 Sloat Boulevard, designed to catch the eye of passing streetcar riders, anchored the development's commercial strip: Lakeside Village on Ocean Avenue.
The Stonesons went on to build Stonestown Shopping Center, which opened in 1952 across 19th Avenue — one of the first large-scale shopping centers in the United States. The Ocean Avenue Lakeside Village commercial corridor, anchored by the distinctive 2501 Ocean Avenue 'rocket ship colonial' building, continues to serve as the neighborhood's commercial center.
Lakeside's story — shaped by two Icelandic immigrant brothers who built a neighborhood from sand dunes and vision — is the kind of San Francisco history MY-NHD apparel carries.
