Lakeview East traces back to the same Lake View Township settled by German, Swedish, and Luxembourgish farmers who grew celery on this stretch of prairie starting in the 1840s. A cholera outbreak in 1849 sent Chicagoans fleeing north to the healthier lakeside air, and the growing settlement was annexed to Chicago in 1889, the same year a real estate boom began that would account for roughly 40 percent of the neighborhood's buildings standing today.

That boom left behind a dense stock of Bedford limestone greystones, many now protected within the Lakeview Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs since 1914, anchors the neighborhood's western edge in the Wrigleyville section, and the Lakeview East Festival of the Arts draws more than 150 artists to Broadway every September.
