Lakeview West grew from the same Lake View Township as its eastern neighbor, but developed at a slower, quieter pace along its western edge near the North Branch of the Chicago River. Annexed to Chicago along with the rest of the township in 1889, the neighborhood filled in with single-family homes, low-rise apartments, and greystones rather than the denser lakefront construction found closer to the water.

Live entertainment shaped the neighborhood's commercial spine: the Vic Theater opened as the Victoria in 1912, the Athenaeum Theater has hosted stage productions for more than a century, and the Music Box Theatre, an independent movie house just north of the neighborhood, has run continuously since 1929. Today the Southport Corridor and the Belmont, Lincoln, and Clark Street business strips give Lakeview West its own commercial identity, distinct from Wrigleyville to the east.
