The Laney College neighborhood takes its name from Laney College — the flagship campus of the Peralta Community College District, opened in its current East Oakland location in 1970 and named for Joseph R. Laney, a longtime member of the Oakland Board of Education whose decades of service to public education in the city were honored in the college's naming. The campus on East 7th Street serves tens of thousands of East Bay students annually across vocational, transfer, and continuing education programs, making it one of the most attended community colleges in California. The adjacent Oakland Museum of California on Oak Street — one of the state's premier history, art, and natural science museums, opened in its current building in 1969 — forms the cultural anchor of the surrounding district alongside the college itself.
