Neighborhood History

Laurel Heights is a residential neighborhood in west-central San Francisco, bordered by Geary Boulevard, California Street, Arguello Boulevard, and Presidio Avenue. The neighborhood occupies the site of the former Laurel Hill Cemetery, which was established in 1854 as Lone Mountain Cemetery — one of four adjacent cemeteries on the hill known in Spanish as El Divisadero. It was renamed Laurel Hill Cemetery in 1867 after the famous garden cemetery in Philadelphia, and at its peak held the remains of approximately 47,000 San Franciscans, including eleven United States Senators and many of the city's Gold Rush founders. The cemetery is designated California Historical Landmark #760. Beginning in the 1880s, the Richmond Banner newspaper campaigned to have the cemeteries removed; in 1939-1941, some 35,000 bodies were exhumed and reinterred, mostly at Cypress Lawn Cemetery in Colma.

The land was then subdivided for housing, built out largely in the 1940s and 1950s with modernist single-family homes and apartments — giving Laurel Heights a distinctly mid-century character compared to the Victorian and Edwardian fabric of neighboring districts. The Laurel Village shopping center on California Street and the Vogue Theatre, one of San Francisco's oldest operating cinemas, anchor the neighborhood's commercial life. The San Francisco Columbarium — the sole surviving structure from the old Odd Fellows Cemetery — stands at One Loraine Court as a domed landmark and active repository.

Laurel Heights' transformation from necropolis to neighborhood is one of San Francisco's most extraordinary urban stories, and MY-NHD apparel carries it forward.
