Neighborhood History
Lincoln Highlands takes its name from Lincoln Avenue — the major East Oakland arterial that connects the flatlands to the hills — and from the neighborhood's elevated position above the surrounding residential districts. Developed circa 1925 during Oakland's hillside residential boom, Lincoln Highlands offered the winding streets and Mediterranean-style homes that characterized the aspirational hillside subdivisions of the interwar period. Lincoln Elementary School — an Oakland Unified School District campus serving the neighborhood — has provided the community's primary educational anchor across the generations of families who have made Lincoln Highlands their home. The Lincoln Avenue commercial corridor connects the neighborhood to the Laurel District below, with independent shops and neighborhood services that have sustained the area's residential character. Dimond Park — one of Oakland's major community parks, with sports fields, a pool, and the Morcom Rose Garden — lies at the base of the Lincoln Highlands slopes along Fruitvale Avenue, providing the neighborhood's primary recreational anchor. That combination of hillside architecture, educational continuity, and community park access defines the MY-NHD Lincoln Highlands collection.
