Lincoln Manor is one of San Francisco's earliest master-planned residence parks, a compact enclave of large Edwardian and Arts and Crafts single-family homes developed between 1912 and 1916 in the Outer Richmond District. The neighborhood was developed by Lyon and Hoag — who also contributed to Forest Hill and Jordan Park — and built by the S.A. Born Building Company, which also constructed parts of Sea Cliff and West Clay Park. Lincoln Manor was designed in the spirit of the City Beautiful movement and garden suburb ideals, with uniform setbacks, design covenants, tree-lined boulevards, and Shore View Avenue running through its center to maximize Pacific Ocean views. Architect Ida McCain, one of the most prolific female architects practicing in San Francisco in the 1910s and 1920s, designed many of the homes, including the residence of developer Stephen A. Born at 414 38th Avenue. The neighborhood is bounded by 36th and 38th Avenues between Clement Street and Geary Boulevard.

Lincoln Manor's proximity to Lincoln Park and the Legion of Honor museum at its western edge gives the neighborhood an exceptional connection to San Francisco's civic and cultural landscape. The California Palace of the Legion of Honor, opened in 1924 in Lincoln Park just north of the neighborhood, anchors the area's western boundary with one of the West Coast's premier art institutions.
