Lithuanian Plaza takes its name from Lithuanian Plaza Court, a street renamed in 1970 to honor the Lithuanian-American community that had settled this stretch of Chicago Lawn since the early 20th century, moving here from Bridgeport in search of better housing. By the 1950s and 1960s, the surrounding Marquette Park area was home to roughly 30,000 Lithuanians, many of them refugees who had fled Soviet occupation after World War II, making it briefly the largest Lithuanian community outside Lithuania itself.

The Sisters of St. Casimir began building their motherhouse here in 1909, expanding it as recently as 1972, and their Legacy Rooms museum, opened in 2018, still tells the story of the Lithuanian-American order's founding. The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, established as a Lithuanian national parish in 1927 and rebuilt in 1957, continues to hold Mass in Lithuanian, and the Lithuanian Youth Center on Claremont Avenue still houses a chapel, art gallery, and research center dedicated to Lithuanian culture.
