Neighborhood History

Little Hollywood is a small pocket neighborhood in the southeastern corner of San Francisco, tucked between the Highway 101 Bayshore Freeway, Bayshore Boulevard, and the Visitacion Valley hills. The neighborhood was developed by local builder William H. Grahn on land purchased from the Crocker Estate around 1929, initially marketed as 'Bayside Hills.' Grahn commissioned architect Charles Strothoff — who did similar work in Westwood Highlands, the Parkside, and other Bay Area neighborhoods — to design the neighborhood's most distinctive homes along the 100 and 200 blocks of Tocoloma Avenue: Spanish Colonial Revival, Mediterranean, and storybook-style bungalows with red tile roofs and stucco exteriors that evoked Southern California's architectural fashions of the 1920s and early 1930s. The name 'Little Hollywood' first appeared in a 1943 real estate listing by agents Becher and Turner, who spotted the resemblance of Strothoff's row to the fanciful Storybook houses of the Hollywood Hills. A local legend — never verified — holds that actress Mae West once owned the Mission Revival home at Blanken and Tocoloma avenues.

The neighborhood's isolation is part of its character: most of its streets dead-end, and the only exit to the north is the Blanken Avenue tunnel, almost hidden on a curve. Little Hollywood Park on Lathrop Avenue serves as the neighborhood's central green space. The Caltrain tracks along the neighborhood's western edge provide a rail connection to the broader Bay Area.

Little Hollywood's combination of cinematic architecture and deliberate isolation makes it one of San Francisco's most distinctive pocket neighborhoods — and MY-NHD apparel carries that secret identity.
