Little Portugal is the historic center of the Portuguese-American community in San José, rooted in the wave of Azorean immigrants who came to the Santa Clara Valley beginning in the 1850s to work in agriculture. The Portuguese who settled in California came primarily from the Azores Islands rather than mainland Portugal, and were traditionally farmers — a heritage that aligned well with the valley's fruit orchards and dairy operations. Over decades the community established a dense network of businesses, social clubs, and civic institutions along the East Santa Clara Street and Alum Rock Avenue corridor.

The Five Wounds Portuguese National Church, consecrated in 1914, stands as the spiritual and architectural heart of the neighborhood — its twin Iberian-style towers visible from the freeway and recognized as one of the most photographed buildings in San José. The Portuguese Historical Museum, housed within History Park at Kelley Park, preserves the community's legacy through a replica of the neighborhood's original Portuguese império chapel. Little Portugal was cited by the Urban Displacement Project at the University of California, Berkeley as one of San José's neighborhoods most at risk of displacement from gentrification, reflecting both its cultural significance and the pressures it faces.
