Little Russia is the informal name for the stretch of Geary Boulevard between approximately 17th and 27th Avenues in San Francisco's Richmond District, which became the center of the city's Russian-speaking community through successive waves of immigration across the twentieth century. The first significant wave arrived after the Russian Civil War ended with the Bolshevik victory in 1921, bringing aristocrats, military officers, and intellectuals fleeing the new Soviet state, many traveling by way of Asia. A second wave followed World War II, when the substantial Russian émigré community in Shanghai and Harbin fled the communist takeover of China. A third wave arrived in the 1970s and 1980s, including many Soviet Jewish refuseniks. Russian-language businesses — bakeries, bookstores, groceries — lined Geary Boulevard, and articles in the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner began using the term 'Little Russia' to describe the enclave in the 1990s.

The Holy Virgin Cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church, at 6210 Geary Boulevard, is the neighborhood's most recognizable landmark. Completed in 1965 and consecrated in 1977, the cathedral was designed by architect Oleg Iwanitsky with five domes covered in 24-karat gold leaf and is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral outside Russia. Cinderella Bakery on Balboa Street and the Globus Books Russian-language bookstore on Balboa, open since 1971, are enduring community anchors.
