Neighborhood History

Little Saigon is the officially designated Vietnamese cultural and commercial district within San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood, centered on Larkin Street between McAllister and Geary Streets. The fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975 brought thousands of Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Laotian refugees to San Francisco, many settling in the Tenderloin where low rents and high tenant turnover made housing accessible. The influx transformed the district, with Vietnamese-owned family businesses, restaurants, community organizations, and religious centers establishing a thriving enclave along Larkin Street through the late 1970s and 1980s. The term 'Little Saigon' was in informal use by 1991, and on September 23, 2003, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to officially designate the area as a Vietnamese cultural and commercial center — one of the first such formal recognitions in the United States.

The formal Little Saigon Gateway was unveiled in July 2008 on Larkin Street at Eddy Street, featuring two marble pillars topped with kỳ lân — mythical Vietnamese animals symbolizing peace and prosperity — donated by the community. The gateway mirrors similar civic markers at Japantown and Chinatown. The Saigon Sandwich shop and surrounding Vietnamese restaurants along Larkin became widely known well beyond the Tenderloin.

Little Saigon's story — of community built in exile, recognized in the heart of the city — is one of San Francisco's most meaningful modern chapters, and MY-NHD apparel carries it.
