Little Saigon in San José is one of the largest Vietnamese-American communities in the world, rooted in the wave of refugees who fled Vietnam following the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Vietnamese refugees settled in San José drawn by the Bay Area's growing economy and its existing Asian community networks. Early Vietnamese entrepreneurs established a commercial corridor along Story Road in East San José, building on the infrastructure left by the Chinese and Japanese communities that had preceded them in the area. By the early 2000s San José had more Vietnamese residents than any city outside Vietnam, with approximately 180,000 Vietnamese Americans making up roughly ten percent of the city's population.

The Story Road corridor became the community's commercial and cultural center, anchored by Grand Century Mall and Vietnam Town. The San José City Council formally recognized the district's name as Little Saigon in 2013, following years of community advocacy that included protests and a hunger strike at City Hall. The Viet Museum — formally the Museum of the Boat People & the Republic of Vietnam — documents the refugee experience and preserves the stories of those who crossed the Pacific in small boats to reach the United States.
