Logan Square takes its name from General John A. Logan, the Civil War commander and Illinois congressman credited with founding Memorial Day. New Yorker Martin Kimball purchased 160 acres of open prairie here in 1836, and the settlement, then known as Jefferson, grew slowly until the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 sent residents seeking affordable wood-frame housing outside the city's stricter post-fire building codes, and Norwegian, German, and English immigrants settled the boulevards that would define the neighborhood.

William Le Baron Jenney and landscape architect Jens Jensen designed the grand public square at the neighborhood's heart, and in 1918 architect Henry Bacon, fresh off designing the Lincoln Memorial, added the 70-foot Illinois Centennial Monument to mark the state's 100th birthday. The surrounding Logan Square Boulevards Historic District, 2.5 miles of intact 1880s-1930s architecture, earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and became a Chicago Landmark in 2005, and Minnekirken, a Norwegian Lutheran church on Kedzie Boulevard, still holds services in Norwegian.
