Neighborhood History
Lone Mountain is a neighborhood and historic hill in west-central San Francisco, rising to a prominent summit the Spanish called El Divisadero — 'the lookout point' — for the sweeping views of land and water it commands. The hill became the anchor of San Francisco's first major cemetery complex when Lone Mountain Cemetery was dedicated on May 30, 1854. Over the following decades the complex grew to encompass four adjacent cemeteries — Laurel Hill, Calvary, Masonic, and Odd Fellows — that together held the remains of approximately 150,000 San Franciscans, including U.S. Senators, Civil War generals, Gold Rush pioneers, and Emperor Norton. Wooden crosses atop the hill were visible across the city for decades. Beginning in the 1880s, pressure mounted to remove the cemeteries as the surrounding Richmond District developed; by 1941 all remains had been exhumed and relocated, primarily to Cypress Lawn Cemetery in Colma.
In 1932, the Religious of the Sacred Heart order began construction of the Spanish Gothic Revival building for the San Francisco College for Women on the former Masonic Cemetery land; this campus became part of the University of San Francisco in 1978. The church of St. Ignatius, a Neo-Baroque landmark completed in 1914 on former Masonic Cemetery land at Parker and Fulton, anchors the neighborhood's southeastern corner. The Odd Fellows Columbarium at One Loraine Court, a green-domed Victorian rotunda completed in 1897, is the sole surviving structure from the original cemetery complex.
Lone Mountain's arc from city of the dead to living neighborhood is unlike any other San Francisco story — and MY-NHD apparel honors that singular history.
