Longfellow is a North Oakland neighborhood named in honor of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow — the 19th-century American poet whose name was applied to streets and neighborhoods across the country in the commemorative naming traditions of the late Victorian era. The neighborhood developed circa 1902 as Oakland's residential grid expanded northward along the San Pablo Avenue and Telegraph Avenue corridors, its stately residential blocks attracting the working and middle-class families who formed Oakland's North Oakland community in the early 20th century. The MacArthur BART station on MacArthur Boulevard — one of the original stations on the BART system opened in 1972 — provides the neighborhood's primary regional transit connection and has anchored commercial activity along the MacArthur corridor for over five decades. Longfellow Elementary School — an Oakland Unified School District campus on 41st Street — has served as the neighborhood's educational anchor since the early 20th century. San Pablo Avenue forms the western commercial corridor, connecting Longfellow to the Temescal District to the north and downtown Oakland to the south.
