Neighborhood History

Longwood Manor sits within the Washington Heights community area on Chicago's Far South Side, an area first settled in the late 19th century where two railroad lines intersected. The Academy of Our Lady, known to generations of residents simply as "Longwood Academy," operated from 1874 until 1999 and lent its name to the neighborhood that grew up around it.

The 95th Street-Longwood station, a rush-hour-only stop on Metra's Rock Island District line at Vincennes Avenue, still carries the Longwood name into daily commuter life, and the neighborhood's tree-lined streets of Tudor Revival and Georgian homes reflect its early 20th-century development as a residential enclave within the larger Washington Heights community.
