Los Paseos takes its name from the Spanish word paseo — a leisurely walk or stroll, particularly one taken in the evening — a word that captures both the character of the neighborhood and its literal design. The community was developed in South San José during the 1970s through 1990s on land near the southern boundary of the city, close to Coyote Valley and the Santa Teresa hills. The neighborhood's Spanish name reflects the broader legacy of Spanish and Mexican settlement that shaped the southern Santa Clara Valley, including the nearby Rancho Santa Teresa land grant that governed much of this region in the nineteenth century.

Two pedestrian pathways — the paseos for which the neighborhood is named — thread through the community, connecting residents to Los Paseos Park, Los Paseos Elementary School, and Martin Murphy Middle School. Los Paseos Park covers 10.8 acres at the intersection of Avenida Grande and Via Vista. The neighborhood's civic identity is maintained by the Los Paseos Neighborhood Association, one of South San José's active community organizations, which coordinates services and events for the approximately 1,500 households within its boundaries.
