Lower Nob Hill occupies the southern slope of Nob Hill between California Street and Geary Boulevard, sitting at the transitional zone between the railroad magnates' hilltop and the flatlands of the Tenderloin. The area is sometimes called Tendernob — a portmanteau reflecting its position between two worlds. Nob Hill itself was named for the Central Pacific Railroad's 'Big Four' nabobs — Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins, Collis Huntington, and Charles Crocker — who built extravagant mansions on the hill's summit in the 1870s. The 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed every mansion, leaving only granite perimeter walls and the partially completed Fairmont Hotel. Lower Nob Hill was rebuilt immediately after the disaster as one of the densest concentrations of apartment hotels in the United States, with construction peaking in 1910-1915 in anticipation of visitors to the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.

The Lower Nob Hill Apartment Hotel District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a California Historical Landmark, encompasses the dense collection of multi-unit residential buildings along Bush, Sutter, and Post Streets. Among its notable residents: in 1911 William Lawrence Murphy, inventor of the Murphy bed, lived at 625 Bush Street. Dashiell Hammett set his fictional detective Sam Spade in this district in The Maltese Falcon (1930), giving the neighborhood an enduring literary landmark.
