Loyola takes its name from Loyola University Chicago, itself named for St. Ignatius of Loyola, the 16th-century founder of the Jesuit order. Jesuits established the school in 1870 as St. Ignatius College on the Near West Side, renamed it Loyola University in 1909, and began relocating to a 20-acre lakefront site in Rogers Park in 1906, with college classes underway there by 1912.

The university reshaped its stretch of the lakefront through the 1930s with dramatic Art Deco buildings, including the Madonna della Strada Chapel and the Mundelein College skyscraper, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 as the only self-contained skyscraper ever built exclusively to educate women. Loyola Park, expanded by the Chicago Park District in 1948 and again in 1971, now spans more than 40 acres along the lake, and the Emil Bach House, the only Frank Lloyd Wright design remaining in Rogers Park, was donated to the university in 2025.
