Neighborhood History
Lynn is a small East Oakland neighborhood whose name reflects the 19th-century practice of transplanting East Coast place names to newly platted California communities — Lynn, Massachusetts, a major industrial city north of Boston, lending its name to this flatland settlement incorporated into Oakland circa 1872. The neighborhood developed along the Oakland-San Leandro Road corridor as one of the small industrial and residential settlements that dotted the East Bay flatlands before Oakland's annexation push absorbed them into the growing city. International Boulevard runs through the neighborhood as its primary commercial and transit artery — the long East Oakland corridor that has connected successive generations of working-class communities to the city's broader economic network. Fremont High School on MacArthur Boulevard — one of Oakland Unified School District's oldest high schools, founded in 1912 — serves the Lynn and surrounding East Oakland flatland communities as the area's most significant institutional anchor. That layered flatland character — a transplanted name on Oakland soil, shaped by generations of working families — is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Lynn collection.

Lynn was named after Lynn, Massachusetts, and incorporated into Oakland in 1872, having been founded as an industrial settlement focused on shoe manufacturing around 1870. Its early years were shaped by factory growth and immigrant labor. Key attractions include the historic Lynn Avenue and the Peralta Hacienda Historic Park. The neighborhood has adjusted to post-industrial decline, and its population today demonstrates resilience, sustaining a working-class ethos while welcoming new neighbors drawn by its urban heritage.
