Lynn is a small East Oakland neighborhood whose name reflects the 19th-century practice of transplanting East Coast place names to newly platted California communities — Lynn, Massachusetts, a major industrial city north of Boston, lending its name to this flatland settlement incorporated into Oakland circa 1872. The neighborhood developed along the Oakland-San Leandro Road corridor as one of the small industrial and residential settlements that dotted the East Bay flatlands before Oakland's annexation push absorbed them into the growing city.
