Neighborhood History

Madison Square is a downtown-adjacent Oakland neighborhood developed circa 1885, its name drawn from Madison Street — the local arterial that connects this district to the broader civic grid — in the tradition of naming residential enclaves after their defining street or public space. The neighborhood grew alongside Oakland's Chinese American community, whose presence along the 8th Street and Webster Street corridors established one of the East Bay's most significant early Asian American communities — a history documented by the Chinese Historical Society of America and the Oakland Museum of California. Madison Square Park, bounded by 10th and 11th Streets, provides the neighborhood's primary community green space and gathering anchor. The Lincoln Square Recreation Center on 7th Street — operated by the City of Oakland — serves the neighborhood and the adjacent Chinatown community with youth programming and community events. The neighborhood's proximity to Oakland Chinatown along Webster Street and 8th Street gives it a distinct cultural character, with independent restaurants, markets, and community organizations reflecting one of the Bay Area's most historically significant Chinese American commercial districts. That layered civic and cultural identity is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Madison Square collection.
