Margate Park takes its name from its namesake fieldhouse, a Chicago Park District facility built to serve the northeast corner of Uptown between Sheridan Road and Lincoln Park. The neighborhood filled in during the early 1900s as part of Uptown's boom as Chicago's largest entertainment district outside the Loop, its ornate terracotta apartment hotels once home to the same high society that frequented the neighborhood's jazz clubs and movie palaces.

The Great Depression and World War II hollowed out that entertainment economy, and many of Margate Park's grand residences were subdivided or fell into disrepair through the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Immigrant communities revitalized the neighborhood starting in the 1970s, and today its lakefront position, just steps from Montrose and Foster Beaches, has drawn a new generation of residents. A 1937 Art Deco building designed by Charles Kristen still stands on the neighborhood's western edge, its cobalt-and-yellow facade a rare surviving echo of the Century of Progress era.
