Marshall Square takes its name from James A. Marshall, who arrived in Chicago in 1832, opened one of the city's earliest dancing schools, and later served as secretary of the Chicago Real Estate Board; Marshall Boulevard, the tree-lined thoroughfare that anchors the neighborhood, carries his name. The square itself, formed where Marshall Boulevard meets 24th Boulevard, Cermak Road, and California Avenue, sat at the city's western edge when the boulevard was platted in the 1890s. Most of the neighborhood's housing stock, along with its civic buildings, rose between 1905 and 1920 as Chicago's park and boulevard system drew residential development to the area.

The Marshall Square Theater, an art deco vaudeville house built in 1917 and now operating as Apollo's 2000, remains one of the neighborhood's most recognizable landmarks. A few blocks away, the former Carter Harrison High School — now Saucedo Scholastic Academy — has stood since 1910 as an anchor of the community's civic life.
