Marynook was carved out of vacant land west of Dorchester Avenue between 1955 and 1968, when developer Joseph E. Merrion — who also built the nearby Merrionette Manor, Merrionette Park, and Hometown subdivisions — laid out 432 split-level and raised-ranch homes on curving streets and cul-de-sacs, a sharp departure from the rigid Chicago grid on the blocks just to the east. The postwar development marked one of the South Side's earliest deliberate attempts at planned racial integration, built to attract white buyers even as Black families began moving in during the early 1960s.

The neighborhood's signature feature remains its own street plan: curving lanes and cul-de-sacs unlike anything in the surrounding bungalow belt, still protected today by a Homeowners Association that has enforced the original architectural character since the subdivision's founding. Marynook backs directly onto Avalon Park, and the Metra Electric's 83rd and 87th Street stations give residents a direct rail line into the Loop.

A subdivision built to prove integration could work, and to look nothing like the rest of the South Side while it did — Marynook's split-level streets carry a distinct piece of Chicago's postwar story. MY-NHD's collection puts that history on record.
