Mayfair began as a rural crossroads known as Montrose before developers renamed it Mayfair in the early 1900s, part of the wave of subdivision that followed the extension of streetcar lines into what is now the Albany Park community area. Volga German families, many arriving from the Jefferson Park settlements just to the west, were among its earliest residents, drawn by the same rail and streetcar access that shaped the neighborhood's grid of two-flats and bungalows.

The Mayfair Pumping Station, a fixture visible from the expressway for generations of Chicagoans, and the neighborhood's namesake Mayfair Park anchor the community physically, while the Chicago Public Library's Mayfair branch on Lawrence Avenue has served the area for decades.

Renamed once already in its short history, Mayfair has never stopped being a crossroads community — one where the Irish American Heritage Center now stands blocks from streets first platted for Volga German railroad families. MY-NHD's collection marks that layered Northwest Side identity.
