Neighborhood History

Merced Manor is a small, quiet residential neighborhood in southwestern San Francisco, bordered by Stern Grove to the north, Lake Merced to the west, 19th Avenue to the east, and Eucalyptus Drive to the south. The neighborhood developed in the 1930s on land that had been watershed property of the Spring Valley Water Company — the private utility that supplied San Francisco's water before the city created its municipal water system. After the city purchased the lake and surrounding infrastructure, Spring Valley began selling its watershed holdings for residential development, and Merced Manor was among the first of the Lake Merced-area subdivisions to be built out. The neighborhood's name reflects its location adjacent to Lake Merced, which takes its name from the Spanish 'laguna de la misericordia,' or lagoon of mercy, recorded by Spanish explorers in the eighteenth century.

The Merced Manor Reservoir, constructed in 1936 and owned by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, is one of the neighborhood's most architecturally distinctive landmarks. Its pump house was designed to resemble a Roman temple, with sculptural details including fountains, Neptune's trident, and an Old Testament high priest figure — an unusual example of civic infrastructure treated as public art. Lowell High School and Lakeshore Alternative Elementary School occupy Eucalyptus Drive along the neighborhood's southern edge.

Merced Manor's quiet lakeside character — small, tucked-in, and architecturally distinct — gives MY-NHD apparel for this address a genuinely local San Francisco identity.
