Merritt is named for Dr. Samuel Merritt — Oakland's mayor from 1867 to 1869 and one of the city's most consequential early civic figures, whose preservation of the tidal lagoon that bears his name created the nation's first official wildlife refuge in 1869. The neighborhood developed circa 1901 with the expansion of Oakland's streetcar network around Lake Merritt, its mid-rise apartment buildings and urban residential blocks reflecting the lakeside density that characterized early 20th-century Oakland. The Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center — the Beaux-Arts civic auditorium on 10th Street built in 1914 and named for industrialist Henry J. Kaiser — is the neighborhood's most significant architectural landmark, currently undergoing adaptive reuse after decades as a municipal events venue. Merritt College originally occupied a campus on Grove Street (now Martin Luther King Jr. Way) in this part of Oakland before relocating to its current Skyline Boulevard campus in 1971. The Lake Merritt BART station on East 12th Street provides the district's regional transit anchor.
