Mid-Market is the seven-block stretch of Market Street between Fifth Street and Van Ness Avenue, forming the transitional zone between downtown, the Tenderloin, SoMa, Hayes Valley, and the Civic Center. Market Street itself was laid out in 1847 by surveyor Jasper O'Farrell, who oriented it toward Twin Peaks and made it the city's widest boulevard at 120 feet. After the 1906 earthquake destroyed the area, Mid-Market was rebuilt as the commercial and entertainment heart of San Francisco — a theater and cinema district with marquees stretching as far as the eye could see along the corridor. From the 1930s through the 1970s, the strip was known as the 'Great White Way of the West,' drawing patrons of all backgrounds to vaudeville houses, movie palaces, and nightclubs. The Market Street Theatre and Loft District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, preserves twenty of its contributing buildings.

The district's decline accelerated after the demolition of the Fox Theater in 1961 and the disruption of BART construction in the late 1960s. A 2011 payroll tax incentive brought Twitter, Uber, Zendesk, and other technology firms to the corridor, sparking a new chapter of investment. The Old San Francisco Mint at Fifth and Mission, one of the few buildings to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire, anchors the neighborhood's eastern edge as a California Historical Landmark.
