Neighborhood History

Midtown Terrace is a residential neighborhood on the western slopes of Twin Peaks, developed between 1953 and the early 1960s by the Standard Building Company under brothers Carl and Fred Gellert. The Gellerts, who had built thousands of Bay Area homes through their Sunstream prefabricated home program since the 1920s, purchased 150 acres on Twin Peaks' western slopes in 1953 and built approximately 800 modest two- and three-bedroom single-family homes following City Beautiful principles — curved streets designed to follow the natural contours of the hillside, with the view side of each street developed first to maximize the sweeping vistas toward Mount Davidson, Sutro Forest, and the Pacific Ocean that the site commanded. City Planning Director Paul Opperman called it 'a tremendous opportunity' to develop a fine residential district.

Midtown Terrace's most recognizable landmark is Sutro Tower, the 977-foot-tall three-pronged television and radio transmission tower completed in 1973 and operated by Sutro Tower Inc. Visible from across the Bay Area and reportedly on clear days from as far as the Sierra Nevada, the tower sits directly above the neighborhood on the Twin Peaks ridge and has become one of San Francisco's most distinctive skyline silhouettes. Midtown Terrace Playground provides community open space amid the hillside homes.

Midtown Terrace's mid-century hillside character — and its ever-present view of Sutro Tower — make it one of San Francisco's most visually distinctive addresses, and MY-NHD apparel carries that identity.
