Neighborhood History

Millsmont takes its name from Mills College — the historic women's liberal arts institution founded in 1852, now Mills College at Northeastern University — whose lush 135-acre campus on MacArthur Boulevard forms the neighborhood's most significant institutional presence. The name combines Mills with the French mont — hill — reflecting both the college's identity and the elevated topography of this section of the East Oakland hills. The neighborhood was laid out circa 1927, its residential streets attracting the educators, professionals, and families who valued proximity to the college campus and the hillside views it offered. Mills College's campus — designed with the assistance of landscape architect John McLaren, the superintendent of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park — is a California Registered Historical Landmark and one of the most architecturally distinguished college campuses in the Bay Area, featuring buildings by Julia Morgan and other significant California architects. Concordia Park provides the neighborhood's primary community green space. MacArthur Boulevard runs along the lower edge as the primary commercial and transit connector to the broader East Oakland network. That combination of academic heritage, hillside character, and historic campus landscape is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Millsmont collection.

Millsmont’s name echoes its proximity to Mills College (now Mills College at Northeastern University) and its hilly topography, with “mont” meaning hill. Laid out around 1927 after the 1906 earthquake, Millsmont became home to those seeking safer ground away from the fault-prone flatlands. Landmarks include Mills College’s lush campus and Concordia Park. The area offers quiet hillside living with panoramic city views, attracting families, educators, and artists who value academic legacy, tight community ties, and diversity.

Crafted from 100% US cotton, this heavy cotton tee features a structured yet soft feel that works across all seasons. The unisex fit offers a comfortable and flattering silhouette for all body types. Whether you're still walking your old block or just looking for a way to keep a piece of Oakland with you wherever you go, this shirt makes that connection visible and personal.
