Mission Dolores takes its name from Mission San Francisco de Asís, founded on June 29, 1776, by Padre Francisco Palóu and Padre Pedro Benito Cambón under the direction of Father Junípero Serra. The mission took its common name from the nearby Arroyo de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores — the Creek of Our Lady of Sorrows — named by Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza on the Friday before Palm Sunday in 1776. The adobe chapel, completed in 1791, is the oldest intact building in San Francisco and the only surviving original mission chapel in California, having withstood the 1906 earthquake that destroyed the adjacent Gothic Revival brick church built in 1876.

The neighborhood grew slowly around the mission through the 19th century, becoming a working-class family district populated by German, Scandinavian, and Irish immigrants. Mission Dolores Basilica, completed in 1918, replaced the destroyed brick church and stands adjacent to the original adobe. The mission cemetery — the only one remaining within San Francisco city limits — contains the graves of approximately 5,000 Ohlone and Miwok people, as well as California's first Mexican governor, Luis Antonio Argüello.

The 1776 founding of Mission Dolores is the founding of San Francisco itself — and MY-NHD honors that origin in every piece made for this neighborhood.
