Neighborhood History
Montclair — its name combining the French mont and clair to evoke a bright, clear hillside — was developed circa 1925 as an upscale residential enclave in the Oakland hills, its winding streets and Craftsman homes designed as a retreat from the urban density of the flatlands below. Montclair Village on Mountain Boulevard is the neighborhood's commercial and community heart — a walkable cluster of independent shops, restaurants, and the Montclair Farmers Market that has sustained a genuine village character across a century of Bay Area urban change. The Montclair Railroad Depot — a surviving structure from the Sacramento Northern Railway that served the hillside communities until 1941 — is a California Registered Historical Landmark and a tangible connection to the transit infrastructure that made Montclair's early development possible. Joaquin Miller Park and Redwood Regional Park border the neighborhood, connecting Montclair residents directly to the East Bay Regional Parks trail network and the redwood forest corridors of the upper hills. Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve lies to the east along Skyline Boulevard. That combination of village commercial character, railroad heritage, and natural park access is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Montclair collection.
