Montclare takes its name from Montclair, New Jersey — chosen by the developers who subdivided the area after William Sayre first staked a claim to 90 acres here in 1836. The Chicago & Pacific Railroad's arrival in 1872, secured by a right-of-way Sayre granted across his own land, gave the fledgling community its first real transportation link, though growth stayed slow; at its 1889 annexation into Chicago, alongside the rest of Jefferson Township, Montclare counted just fourteen houses and 120 residents.

The Sayre family's own 1916 land donation created what is now Rutherford Sayre Park, still the neighborhood's central green space and home to the Galewood Mont Clare branch of the Chicago Public Library. The Grand Avenue streetcar, extended to the area in 1912, brought the Tudor-style houses and brick bungalows that still line Montclare's streets today.

Named for a New Jersey suburb but built on land a single settler claimed by hand, Montclare has always been a study in quiet reinvention. MY-NHD's collection carries that history forward.
