Morgan Park takes its name from Thomas Morgan, an English immigrant who used a family inheritance to establish a cattle and sheep ranch on the Blue Island Ridge in 1844. When the Blue Island Land and Building Company purchased roughly 3,000 acres from Morgan's heirs in 1869, the firm platted streets, planted thousands of trees, and marketed the result as a garden suburb free from the city's smoke and noise. The community incorporated as the Village of Morgan Park in 1882 — a dry, temperance-founded settlement — and wasn't annexed into Chicago until 1914.

Morgan Park Military Academy, founded in 1873, remains one of the oldest private military schools in the Midwest and still occupies its original ridge-top campus, while the George C. Walker Branch of the Chicago Public Library has served the community since 1893. The Queen Anne-style depot at 111th Street, built for the Rock Island line, and the architect-lined homes of Longwood Drive still trace the shape of the original 1870s suburb.

Planned from the start as an escape from the city, then annexed into it decades later, Morgan Park still carries the ridge-top character its founders intended. MY-NHD's collection honors that uncommon Chicago story.
