Mount Davidson takes its name from George Davidson, geographer and Sierra Club charter member, who surveyed the peak. The hill — previously called Blue Mountain — was renamed in Davidson's honor after Adolph Sutro's death in 1898. Sutro had purchased approximately 1,200 acres of Rancho San Miguel in 1881 and enlisted schoolchildren to plant eucalyptus, cypress, and pine trees across the slopes, creating an urban forest that persists today. After Sutro's heirs sold the land to developer A.S. Baldwin, Baldwin blazed hiking trails to the summit to draw buyers to the residential neighborhoods he was building at the mountain's base.

A 40-foot wooden Easter sunrise cross was first erected in 1923 by YMCA director James Decatur, drawing over 5,000 attendees. The permanent 103-foot concrete cross — designed by architect George Kelham and dedicated in 1934 with President Franklin D. Roosevelt's participation — became one of San Francisco's most recognized landmarks. In 1997, following a legal battle over its placement on public land, the parcel beneath the cross was sold to the Council of Armenian American Organizations of Northern California, which rededicated it as a memorial to the Armenian Genocide.
