Neighborhood History

Mount Dennis is a York neighbourhood along Eglinton Avenue West between the Humber River and the Kitchener rail line, centred on Weston Road. Its modern story is tied to Kodak. In 1912 Kodak bought 25 acres of farmland here and began building Kodak Heights, a manufacturing campus that grew to about 3,000 workers in the 1970s before the plant closed in the mid-2000s. Dennis Community School on Dennis Avenue has served the area since 1891.

Of the dozen-plus buildings on the Kodak campus, only Kodak Building 9, built in 1939, survives. Metrolinx acquired the land for the Eglinton Crosstown line, moved the 3,000-tonne building about 200 feet in 2016 and returned it to make it the centrepiece of Mount Dennis station, a hub linking Line 5 Eglinton with the GO Kitchener line and UP Express at Weston Road and Eglinton. The line's maintenance facility sits on the old Kodak site. York became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998.

The Mount Dennis tee is for the neighbours of Kodak Heights and the new station at Weston Road and Eglinton.
