Naglee Park takes its name from Brigadier General Henry Morris Naglee, a Civil War officer, California banking pioneer, and vintner who purchased 140 acres adjacent to downtown San José in 1858. Naglee studied viticulture in Europe and established a vineyard and brandy distillery on his San José estate, producing a brandy that earned him recognition as the "Father of Californian brandy." His Victorian country house, built circa 1865 at the corner of 14th and San Fernando Streets, remains the oldest structure in the neighborhood and one of the few surviving pre-1906 buildings in the area.

Nearly twenty years after Naglee's death in 1886, his two daughters formed the Naglee Park Improvement Company and subdivided the estate in 1902, creating what is recognized as the first planned suburban neighborhood in Santa Clara County. The Naglee Park Conservation Area, recognized by the City of San José, contains an eclectic collection of early twentieth-century homes in Craftsman, Victorian, Bungalow, and Spanish Colonial Revival styles — most built for the valley's doctors, lawyers, merchants, and fruit company managers between 1902 and the 1930s. The Naglee Carriage Houses at 49 and 95 South Fourteenth Street are listed as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood sits immediately east of San José State University, the oldest public university on the West Coast.
